Brand endorsements bring major money

Brand endorsement has picked up momentum among marketers in the region during the past years, and amounts to millions of dollars in exchange between corporates and individuals.

Industry experts believe contract fees have soared up above a million dollars for a campaign, almost ranging between $1.5m and $3.5m (Dh5.5m and Dh12.8m), taking into consideration the calibre of celebrities and the duration of the campaign.

Egyptian singer, Amr Diab who appeared with three Hollywood stars for a Pepsi campaign a couple of years ago, said he received $3.2m for the endorsement, while Elissa is said to be making more than a million dollars for her tie up with Samsung. Bottom line, firms are investing huge amounts for hiring the right celebrities.

Boycott Off

AMMAN // A summer festival featuring popular Arab singers and international celebrities has drawn the ire of Jordanian political parties and Islamists over the alleged involvement of an advertising company that was reported to have organised Israel’s 60th anniversary celebrations this year. Jordan’s professional associations, dominated by Islamists, have called for the musicians and stars to boycott the event.

But the ministry of tourism and the Jordan Tourism Board, the bodies overseeing the cultural event, deny they had solicited the co-operation of the French company, Publicis Groupe, a leading advertising and communication firm that has a presence in Israel. The company has also denied any involvement in the festival or that it organised Israel’s celebrations.

A spokesman for the Jordan Tourism Board also said none of the Arab singers, including Amr Diab, an Egyptian pop star, and Elissa, a Lebanese singer, had pulled out. “They were first considering [boycotting], but now, when they got the accurate information from us, everything is on track,” she said.

Jordan festival boycott

REPORT ONE OF TWO:
AMMAN - Arab singers will boycott a music festival in Jordan next month over claims it is being set up by the same company which organised Israel's 60th anniversary celebrations in May, a union leader said on Monday.

Jordan's tourism board, however, denies that the company involved in the Israeli festivities is involved in the festival. "Publicis Groupe has nothing to do with Jordan Festival. Another French company, Les Visiteurs du Soir, is organising the event and it has been contracted by the tourism ministry," Tourism Board chief Nayef Fayez said.

Hadid said that Jordanian popular singer Omar Abdallat and Egyptian crooner Amr Diab are among Arab singers "who have announced their boycott of the event in line with decisions by their unions."

REPORT TWO OF TWO:
Amman - The Jordanian government appeared Monday under mounting pressure to cancel the Jordan Festival after at least three local and Arab singers announced they will not be performing at the event, citing "suspicion of normalizing ties with Israel.

President of the Cairo-based General Union of Arab Artists Sayyed Radi told the Jordan Times that Egyptian singers Amr Diab and Mohammad Hamaqi were not coming to Jordan for their scheduled concerts.
